The Fruits, Er, Vegetables Of Our Labor

Lettuce

Fresh garden lettuces can’t be beat. They’re crisp – yet soft – and full of flavor (yes, lettuceĀ does have a flavor – no, it doesn’t taste like dirt).

Earlier this week we enjoyed a fantastic salad for dinner, made with our first crop of lettuce this season. Considering this is our first time growing lettuceĀ ever, I was very pleased with how it turned out.

Planting the lettuce was really simple – we set the seeds into their “nursery” pots, and watered them daily. When they were a few inches high, they were ready to be transplanted – and we were ready for them to grow some mean, green lettuce leaves.

The nice thing about leaf lettuce is that you can chop off whatever you need for a salad (from the bottom of the plant) and the plant will still produce more leaves from the center. Or you can hack the whole plant and prep some more seeds. Of note: the leaves seem to grow at a nice rate – you’ll be able to enjoy quite a bit of salad.

Most of our other plants are still itty bitty. The tomatoes are coming along nicely, but not near the fruiting stage yet. The carrots and parsnips look like tiny weeds. I know I’ve just got to be patient – and enjoy my salad.

Was this from using your aerogarden? It looks great!!!

Thank you, Karen! But no, the lettuce did not come out of the Aero – it came from our “regular” garden.
